Paul Okewunmi

Paul-Okewunmi

Hi, I’m Paul Okewunmi, a Master’s student in Engineering Artificial Intelligence at Carnegie Mellon University Africa.

My research interests are in multilingual NLP, particularly for low-resource languages, and AI agents. Across both areas, I’m interested in understanding how LLMs behave in settings where they are least tested. My work so far has focused on evaluating model robustness to natural linguistic variation, including dialect differences, informal spelling, and code-mixing, and developing evaluation frameworks that reveal robustness and safety gaps affecting underrepresented language communities.

My research on LLM robustness to typographical noise in Yorùbá question answering won the Best Paper Award at AfricaNLP 2025. I also co-authored UbuntuGuard (ACL Findings 2026), a culturally grounded AI safety benchmark examining how safety behaviours vary across African languages and contexts. Beyond these projects, I contribute to open research communities, including ML Collective and Cohere Labs. At Cohere Labs, I co-lead work on Afri-Aya, a multimodal African-language dataset that won Expedition Aya 2025.

My work on AI agents focuses on reliability and evaluation in practical deployments. As a founding AI engineer at 5.Y, I built the first version of the company’s customer-engagement agents and developed an evaluation framework that simulates user personas to test agent behaviour before deployment. Earlier, through the MLH Fellowship, I became a core contributor to laser-encoders, a Python library for Meta AI’s LASER multilingual embeddings, collaborating with Kevin Heffernan and David Dale.

I graduated with First Class Honours in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University in 2024. As an undergraduate researcher at A2IR2 Labs under Prof. K. P. Ayodele, I worked on UAV precision landing.
